Resume Tip - Make an effective Resume

Your resume is an advertisement about you.

If you are working with an Employment Agency, have your resume ready before your first face-to-face meeting with them. Agencies may or may not help you develop your resume. Many are not experts in writing resumes, but they certainly see a lot come through their offices. You can use a professional resume writing service, however if you follow the sequential information provided here, you will save yourself a lot of money.

Have you ever heard the statement, "Don’t judge a book by its cover"? Because your resume is the first thing a potential employer will see, many will judge your resume whether or not they will grant you the time for an interview. Keep in mind that many companies don’t only look for experience, they look for accomplishments, whether you can handle more than one task at a time whether you are a stable individual with a proven track record. You are probably thinking, "How could I ever portray that in a resume?"

Preparing the Resume

There are at least two types of resumes. With the reverse chronological resumes, you list jobs you've had. Your most recent job is listed first, your job before that is listed second, and so on. Each job has employment dates and job duties.

With functional Resumes, you describe your skills, abilities and accomplishments that relate to the job you're applying for. Your employment history is less detailed than chronological resumes.

Ten tips for the effective resume

1. Type your resume or print it on a computer printer. Use 8 1/2" x 11" good quality white bond paper.

2. Do not include irrelevant personal information such as age, weight, height, and marital status.

3. Do not include salary and wages.

4. Do not use abbreviations.

5. Be positive. Identify accomplishments.

6. Use action verbs, such as "organized", "developed", "created". These give the impression of an exceptional energetic employee.

7. Be specific. Use concise sentences. Keep it short (one page is best).

8. Make sure your resume is neat and readable.

9. Proofread the master copy carefully. Have someone else proofread the master copy carefully.

10. Inspect photocopies for clarity, smudges and marks.
