Career Tips - Before you hit the wall

Tension levels escalate and exhaustion peaks as you find yourself working unearthly hours to meet deadlines. Learn to handle stress!!

Before you hit the wall…

Deadlines perpetually round the corner, important business meetings, a pending visit to the dentist, home shopping, hustle here, bustle there…

Tension levels escalate and exhaustion peaks as you find yourself working unearthly hours to meet deadlines. Trying to maintain equilibrium while juggling work and family takes its toll and it's only a matter of time before fatigue and burnout overtake you!

Here are a few things to watch out for -

Distress signals

At times when you are exhausted, it will do you good to take a couple of minutes off to let out the steam, especially when your body demands it. Whether it's resting your eyes at work, or resting your back at home, small breaks will definitely help keep fatigue at bay.

Sleep it off

Sometimes fatigue is a direct result of lack of sleep. At times when you feel you just can't go on, take a day off to catch-up on sleep, or call for a sabbatical on weekends.

Let-go!

Stress is the one of the main reasons for burnout. Plan your work in such a way that you accommodate rest periods and make it to deadlines as well. Try to do justice to your work but don't over-do it. Carrying your work home will not help in anyway, so it's best to take it easy.

Life minders

Make use of home delivery services and maybe even the Internet's 'pay on delivery' facility. Have someone helps you with housekeeping. Arrange things in handy places so that you don't have to exhaust yourself, but rather conserve energy for the more important tasks.

Watch your diet

If you are heading for a burnout, it's time to take some extra vitamins to supplement your regular food intake. Don't miss out on a good breakfast. Eat healthy foods and avoid excessive alcohol and go slow on coffee. If your stamina levels are low, then you need to build them up with a regular workout pattern.

Back-ups

There may be times when you are swamped with work. Explain to your family that you will not be able to contribute too much to the home front.

Don't miss out on fun or lose your sense of humour. Look at problems as challenges, celebrate successes and remember that hard times will pass.
