Career Tips - Relocation Hangover

Relocation essentials never leave home without it.

Relocating to a new place is a difficult and a painful process. Moving to a new town means starting out all over again. Leaving your friends, comfort, familiarity is difficult. Over and above that the process of packing and unpacking is hateful. So, it is imperative for you to be meticulous when it is time to pack your bags, lock stock and barrel.

Where are you moving?
On the job, you are obviously moving to another town or city. Get to know the city. Make efforts to understand the city, from the point of view of people, their attitudes, civic sense and the rules of life out there. Moving to a new place can be both exciting and disastrous, so know about it. As they as, it is important to be Roman in Rome.

Your first trip
Concentrate your efforts on finding an accommodation. Make use of all the possible contacts in the city. A good idea would be to take local help. Catch someone who has lived in the city for a fair amount of time. Ask your colleagues as well. Identify a few good residential areas and based on your budget, scout for accommodation. Use your work credentials to find yourself a better place to live in.

Clear up your old place
Relocating involves clearing up a good deal of paper work. Getting every document into place is tedious. Make sure all your certificates at work and other documents are duly attested and all formalities completed, so you do not need to come back again and again. Ensure that all payments are cleared. Notify the telephone, the bank, credit card, insurance and utility service firms such as gas and other services that can be transferred to the new location.

Packing
Plan your packing room by room. First and foremost clear out all the junk. To minimise loss, pack according to location.

New workplace
Make your first friends in the office. For a few days, the workplace becomes your only haunt till you develop a social circle for yourself. Take your phone book along with you. You may need to make calls to friends and relatives back home.

Food
Food is always a major concern. However, every new place would have a few hotels and joints that serve the kind of food you like. Check them out till your palette is sensitised to the native food style. Every kind of food is going to be equally nutritious, but it takes a while for your taste buds to accept new kinds of food with relish.

Keep these pointers in mind and you never have to suffer a relocation hangover!!
